Find and Share Places with Google Maps

 07 / April / 2007 by Riley

Google Maps has recently added the My Maps interface to their map software. You can create your own custom maps and save them with markers, routes, tags and other info. Each map created has it’s own unique URL that can be shared with others.

Ongopongo.com is a website where you can share your maps and vote on other maps submitted to the site. The purpose of the site is to create a database of map links that can be organized and searched using a variety of methods.

I think it would be great to easily search for interesting places on a spontaneous road trip. Hopefully this will take off. It could be a powerful tool if enough people submit maps containing their personal knowledge of areas around the world.

Check out the site and share your Google My Maps, so I can find new places on my next trip.

There’s also a new Tool to Embed Google My Maps that easily enables the embedding of your Google map in your blog or website.

Here’s a page with more information.

It will be interesting to see the effect of Google My Maps on the plethora of other online map sites. They’re in for some tough competition.

Looks like it could be useful. We’ll see how it works out.

Hi … I have absolutely NO experience with setting up a VPN, but all the articles pointed to OpenVPN being the best. THANK YOU for your step-by-step guide! After a few misses, (My fault) – I got it up and running. You said we need to create as many users as we need when we set it up. I started with 5 because that’s the most that would be connected at one time, but when I tried to test with the same client1 keys on different laptops, the same key wouldn’t work on the 2nd laptop, even tho the 1st was OFF. So – do we need to create the number that would be connected at 1 time? Or is each key good for only 1 computer and once it’s activated, it can’t be reused? Also – When I couldn’t get connected, I changed the .128 to .252 so the router and the server.ovpn matched – and was then able to connect. Do I need to change it back? And – I had to set the 1st DNS to my static IP and the 2nd DNS to my internet provider’s DNS before I could stay connected to both – was that right? Due to the number of linksys routers in my area, I had changed my router IP 192.168.1.11 – and the current configuration did not connect until I changed my router back to 192.168.1.1 – If I change it back to 192.168.1.11, which OpenVPN setting do I need to change? Lots of questions – but once again THANK YOU – THANK YOU – THANK YOU!!!!
